The forests in Brazil have depleted to just 7% from what they used to be. This forest on it's own was a C02 sponge for the earth and absorbed and compensated for carbon emissions, by replacing that C02 with oxygen.

Now the Atlantic Forest Conservation program is preparing to replant that forest to put it back to where it was, another bright light in a world in desperate need of similar common sense.  Applause Hoping and Praying

All this is great news, but still the Bazillion government allows thousands of square Kilometres of clearing of the forest each year, forests which takes hundreds of years to develop. It's just crazy, but once again there is economic value in it and the increasing population to look at, stuff the rest of the world. Stamp Feet

Same as in Asia where they clear the forest to plant the Palm Sugar plantations. They burn off the jungle and create huge clouds of smoke that sometimes prevent the airlines flying. You can only shake your head in amazement at this crude and old fashioned methodology. Erosion arrives at the next Monsoon season and the topsoil sweeps down into the rivers causing yet more trouble. That's ironic that you should mention that. When Indonesia had those wild fires they screamed blue murder to have them put out! Nature was doing it for them. It's just plain hypocrisy.

They are happy to razz Australia re boat people, but it is their law enforcement taking the bribes to turn their back to what is happening under their noses. Palm sugar is a scourge in these tropical countries so much money to be made so just bulldoze another 1000 acres of jungle.
