We've been up close to one of these charming critters.  On a holiday some years ago in Browlee (NSW) we booked a nice cabin near the beach. The loo was in the bathroom, and as nature has a habit of calling, there I sat, and saw one of these rearing its ugly head near the shower.  I was frozen with fear, calmly called hubby, and he was able to catch it in a glass container.  He took it somewhere (I can't remember where), and it was definitely a funnel web.  I shudder as I remember this as I type. Freezing was the best possible thing that you have done even though it was involuntary Km, the dam things react and strike at anything that threatens them or moves, and those days there probably wasn't the anti venom available.

I always remember the story of a young mum in Sydney. She had her little one on the patio, and she heard the child laughing in bursts quite loudly, so went out to capture the moment. Her child was moving a toy from left to right across the floor, and she found that a Funnel Web was following the toy as the baby moved it.

When the young mum rushed to pick up her child, the Funnel Web stuck at her child. Unfortunately the child passed away very quickly. These things not only think, they are cunning and certainly not to be played around with.

So sad, however there are quite a few stories like that one from the days when the anti venom did not exist. There is one dumb idiot in Sydney that has them all over his back yard, and he walks around in bare feet! Well he could be dead now?

Foolish man.  Never play Russian Roulette with a Funnel Web.

Any spider that comes anywhere near me gets the squirt of Mortein and the rolled up newspaper treatment. I came home last week at about 9.45 and turned the kitchen light on as I entered the room, yikes a white tailed spider was on my ceiling, sprayed him dead, then picked him up in paper towel before he met the rubbish bin - and I squashed him with a wine bottle too!!!!

Always pull back the bedclothes before getting into bed, white tails love to get into the bed too!

A White Tail bite put my MIL in hospital many years ago.  Her leg ulcerated, and took ages to heal.   PK, you sure gave that spider the heave ho.... Smile
